Mineralienverein Oberwolfach

The Association

History

The association was founded on November 6, 1986, by 31 founding members in Oberwolfach. It was driven by the desire of many collectors to present their mineral specimens appropriately to a wide audience, which was only possible through the establishment of a museum.

Together with the municipality of Oberwolfach, the museum was set up in an old, former farmhouse dating back to 1769 and opened in 1989. The museum was expanded in 1997/98. In 2008, the MFO (Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach) joined with the “Imaginary” exhibition.

Here, for example, mineralogical questions can be explored interactively on large screens. Following further renovations, the museum was essentially reopened in 2010. The museum features everything from micromounts to hand specimens and large-scale specimens.

The association is also the publisher of the journal “Der Erzgräber,” which features previously unpublished articles on minerals from the Black Forest, mining, and mining history.
